Wow. I know I am not the only one who thinks about the future and wish for this, to be spared somewhat from the ravages of time and to sail through the twilight of my life with ease and elegance. My older sister reminded me again recently about Baby Boomers and their needs. While I fall a year short of being officially included in that demographic group, I do feel their pain. Having been a dancer for 20 years, I understand the need to care for a body not too happy with what it has been [...]

We’re the first generation to hit middle age (and official “senior” status) that knows we’re going to live longer—and healthier. And that means we still have at least another 20 years to make our dreams come true.
Julia Child, Gandhi, Dr. Ruth, and authors Laura Ingalls Wilder and Frank McCourt were all late bloomers.
You can be one, too.
How? That’s the question I asked myself, because I’ve recreated myself several times in these years between middle-age and whatever’s next. And I’m still doing it.
Life and opportunities are not over just because we’re aging. In many [...]

As I recently delved into all sorts of questions regarding oh… little things such as the dichotomy of love & desire in my marriage and the discovery of seeing myself as a sensual being, the thought pattern inevitably led me to questioning my “beauty”.
Actually, what does “beauty” mean? It’s hard to discern, especially in our society, exactly what makes a person beautiful. The continuous assault of “perfect beauty” imagery wants us to believe one thing. Wiser outlets – and even dedicated organizations – tell us that beauty comes in all colors, shapes and sizes… And ages.
I’m 50 [...]

Let me start this article by saying that I want to share with you a book that has literally brought new life into this aging body, mind and soul of mine. I learned about this book when Esther Perel recommended it after reading my article that mentioned her TedTV video on Love and Desire in a Long-Term Relationship.
The author, François Roland, is a self-proclaimed quintessential Frenchman, who knows personally about women, making love and living a sensual life. Not sure if this was a book for me, I grabbed the sample chapter for my Kindle [...]

Audrey and I were honored to be interviewed by Becca Niederkrom at the AgingInsider.com. She featured us in her new series called the 5 Alarm Boomer Blogger Series. Becca is all about empowering the aging senior, especially on the tech gadgets and systems. She also reaches out to us Baby Boomers as she knows well that we are the ones making most of the decisions for our aging parents. Here’s more about Becca’s work.
If you ever wondered how this whole bloggin’ thing got started, you’ll have to story right here as painfully coaxed out of us by Becca!

I was recently on a short flight from Toronto to Chicago and sat beside a gentleman from France. I normally have casual chats with the person sitting beside me that either end as quickly as they start or we find a common interest and talk the whole flight.
This chance encounter was different. I do need to preface this post with the fact the I have been happily married to the same man for almost 27 years.
This man ignited something in me that has left me seeing myself in a very different way. In the one [...]

A high school friend of mine is just going through a divorce and getting back on the dating scene. He is successful, attractive and with a great sense of humor. At age 50, he does not want to settle down but rather, wants to have fun and simply enjoy someone else’s company. Although, he has not had any problems meeting women, he still finds it challenging to meet someone who has similar interests, tastes and is old enough to have watched Seinfeld as an adult (and not in reruns!).
Clearly, social media does make it easier [...]

When a women says “Is it hot in here?”, we all know what she is talking about. Yes, peri-menopause and the dreaded hot flashes.
I recently went to the doctor for my annual check up. The lovely “I-just-got-my-degree” Nurse Practitioner asked me how I was doing. I gave her the run down of all my peri-menopausal symptoms: weight gain, irritability, forgetfulness, insomnia and night sweats. She pulls out two sheets of paper. One was on tips for healthy eating (really?) and the other one was on how to get a good night’s sleep. I know she [...]

My husband surprised me with a 50th birthday party this summer. He invited all my friends throughout my many stages of life to come and share pictures of me when they knew-me-back-when. It was really fun to watch the slide show and reminisce about the good times with old friends.
There was one of me on my father’s sailboat that my sister must have included. I have no idea who took the photo and only know that I was about twenty at the time. What I do remember is her! I love the fresh-face, carefree, braless, [...]

Yep. That previously taboo subject is now discussed in the open. How women dealt with “it” before they could ever talk to anyone about it, god only knows. But we are talking about it now. Menopause. Menopause. Menopause. So much so, that there is now even day named in its honor.
Indeed, today, October 18 is World Menopause Day. And we are thankful for it. Honestly, it’s not that World Menopause Day is such a fun celebratory day. Anyone having experienced hot flashes just a few moments ago will agree. There’s lots to curse at. But we are thankful that the [...]
