Volksware – a New Perspective in Consumer Goods

I love the flux of creativity that our eco-challenges are creating. Take this Dutch brand (this is what they call themselves, a Brand, not a company) that is making us look at consumer products from another angle. Literally.
VolksWare means “people’s product” or “product for people”. The form of the product depends on the idea and concept behind the project. Volksware explores the function of today’s consumer goods.
The Volksware carpet questions the effect of the over supply and mass production on the consumer. the cloth carpet represent a person’s lifetime consumption of clothing. By, for convenience, it is sold by the [...]

Pink Ladies Taxis – For Women Only!

It isn’t always safe being chauffeured around!  In London alone, 10 women are attacked each month after getting into an unlicensed mini-cab. No wonder that many women feel safer taking a taxi driven by a woman. Pink Ladies spotted a business opportunity, and created the UK’s first women-only private car hire franchise.
The Pink Ladies drive Renault Kangoos that are pink inside and out, making them highly visible. Passengers sign up as members, and fares are either pre-paid, paid by credit card or with a ‘pink account’, which is convenient for members and safe for drivers. Booking is done over the [...]

Aubergine is my New Black

Aubergine, Eggplant, Mauve, Plum, Purple, Mulberry, Pomegranate, Violet… Whatever you call it, this color rocks!
I bought this bag, pretty much as a last ditch attempt to replace my former one that was falling apart.  I hardly have time to shop, so scouring the malls to find my new favorite handbag was not an option at the time .  I have one handbag. Well, ok, I have several, but is really only ever use one. I don’t have the time either to change handbags every morning. So, I do just use one handbag until that handbag is no more, cast away [...]

10×10 / 100 Words and Pictures: How I Get my World News

“10×10™ (‘ten by ten’) is an interactive exploration of the words and pictures that define the time. The result is an often moving, sometimes shocking, occasionally frivolous, but always fitting snapshot of our world.”
This has been my browser’s homepage for a little over a year now. I don’t think of as anything unique anymore until someone comes by my desk as I open my browser and asks me “What’s that?” Then I realize that it is something special and is, in fact, how I get most of my world news (a lot of it is BBC).
You can read more this [...]

The SingelRingen – A Tool for Singles

I can’t relate. Have been married (to the same wonderful man) for almost 19 years, but I know that a few of my friends might find this a useful tool — in certain environments! Whether one celebrates being single or needs to “advertise” that the fact, the Singelringen (in Swedish, where the company is from) is a cute and potentially very effective concept. As the Web site says: “There are engagement rings and wedding rings, but there was no such thing as a ring for single men and women. Why not? If anyone needs to signal one’s civil status, it’s [...]

Birthday Wishes for Homeless Children

I can’t remember how I heard about this organization a while ago, but I remember making a note, knowing that I would want to refer to it in my yet-to-be blog. BirthdayWishes.org is a simple concept that certainly tugs at the heartstrings. www.BirthdayWishes.org is the only organization that brings birthday parties to homeless children. That’s its  only mission.
Birthdays are important milestones in a child’s life and, Lisa Vasiloff, Karen Yahara, and Carol Zwanger, the three founders of the organization, believe that the gift of a birthday party provides normalcy, joy and hope in the otherwise unsettled lives of children living [...]

Magnetic Clothes Hanger

Can someone please start manufacturing these magnetic clothes hangers? My children my be encouraged to start hanging their clothing if it could be made into a fun experience. But then, the novelty would surely wear off and we’d be back to square one…  In any case, these magnetic hangers would make for a really cool display in a retail environment…
