Demystifying Hypnosis

25 February 2010 3 Comments

Note from the Succulent Wife: I am thrilled to present you with this first in a series of articles by Kym Tolson, Certified Hypnotherapist (among other things!). Even though I’ve experienced hypnotherapy with success on a number of occasions, it has always very mysterious to me and, I’m guessing perhaps to you too. So, after meeting Kym on 1000Markets where she has a shop, I thought I would invite her to share her thoughts and insights to help us demystify the subject. Enjoy and please share your thoughts.

Did you know that you are hypnotized on a daily basis? Have you gotten to work only to realize you don’t actually recall driving there? Have you ever been watching television and realized five minutes later that your significant other has been talking to you? Have you ever completely zoned out during a meeting? All of these are examples of a naturally occurring state of relaxation that is also known as hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state of deep relaxation where the subconscious mind is more susceptible to suggestion. Today, I hope to demystify the hypnotic state of mind and bring awareness to the wonderful healing that comes from using hypnosis to transform your life.

HypIf someone is unfamiliar with hypnosis, I’m usually asked some variation of “Will you make me cluck like a chicken?”  Most people think they will be under the control of the hypnotherapist if they try hypnosis. The truth is a person will only do what they want to do in the hypnotic state. When a person is hypnotized, they are always aware of what’s going on around them.  They remain in control of everything they say and do. We have all seen stage hypnotists that make people cluck like a chicken. The secret is that a stage hypnotist chooses people that seem more likely to want to “perform” on stage.

The next question is always “does it work?” The short answer is “YES”. Hypnosis allows a person to quiet their conscious mind and automatic negative programming long enough to hear new positive messages. Positive messages translate into healthier, positive, life changes. If a person believes it will work- it will work. It’s the same principle of “The Secret” or the Law of Attraction. Whatever messages we take in, we will put out. If we are programmed to think we are unhealthy, fat, depressed, inflicted with a disease etc. this is how we will live our lives. Changing the messages we believe changes the way we live our lives. Hypnosis allows us to become deprogrammed and reprogrammed to a healthier way of living.

If your mind believes the messages it is receiving, the body will believe it too. Hypnosis has been widely successful in treating chronic headaches, back pain, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, panic attacks, depression, obesity, and many more. It not only treats medical problems but many psychological issues as well. Some of my best selling hypnosis sessions treat weight loss, low self-esteem, poor organization, poor concentration, procrastination, and codependency to name just a few.

By now you are probably thinking, how can I use hypnosis to transform my life? The easiest and most efficient way is to use prerecorded hypnosis sessions that address the issue you want to change. Another option is to seek out the services of a local hypnotherapist. They will create customized sessions to address your specific situation. Lastly, learning to self-hypnotize and to create your own sessions is another viable option. In my next installment, I will address the process of using self-hypnosis in your life. I hope you will leave comments and questions below to start an open dialogue about the benefits of hypnosis.

I’ve been using hypnotherapy for about a month now. I’m making strides I think. I used it for weight loss, and I really enjoy my therapist, but none of what I’m doing in her office is different from what I am doing at home except she’s guiding me instead of a recording or myself.

I’m enjoying your website! I favorited you!

Thanks Ami! Please let us know how hypnotherapy progresses for you. I know that it helped me break some negative patterns, but there were no big Aha! moments. It just happened, subtly over time. Let us know, will you? And stay tuned for Kym’s next article in a couple of weeks.

Oh, and thanks for favoriting us! Woot!

      Hi Ami,
I’m so glad you’re seeing results. I will usually make a recording of my in-office sessions for the client to reinforce the hypnosis once they get home. The more you listen the more effective hypnosis can become. I hope you’ll keep us updated.
