Foodzie.com – Like Etsy But For Food. Yummm!

6 January 2009 2 Comments

foodzie-logoI’ve been waiting for this website to be a little further along in its development before I shared it with you (there were only three food artisans featured on the site when it first launched very recently). With a still growing array of food merchants now featured on the site, I can no longer wait…

Foodzie.com is an online marketplace, like Etsy, but in this case showcasing delights of the edible kind. Foodzie focuses on gourmet and organic health foods, allowing small producers to set up storefronts to display and sell their products.  Food producers are featured through their own web pages that provide all the information (ingredient, allergens, …) that you would want to know. And also like its artsy counterpart, Foodzie provides the background story of the vendors.

We can now shop and enjoy rare and exclusive finds from food artisans that we would otherwise never had known about. Here are some of my favorite Foodzie finds:

bravo-farms-sage-cheddar-cheese175 Western Sage Cheddar by Bravo Farms – Traver, California.
A white cheddar flavored with sage! I’ve never had that before but I can imagine it in a second melted, on a roasted vegetable panini! Bravo Farms uses milk from the family farm and their cheeses are handcrafted in small batches. Like in the good old days! See the Bravo Farms cheese menu HERE.
Q Tonic – Brooklyn, New York
Way back when, tonic water originated as a medicinal drink (to fight malaria) but has since evolved in a carbonated soft drink flavored with the quinine that provides it with its bitter taste. And as you well know, it is a popular drink mixer for cocktails. Here, Q Tonic has crafted a superior tonic water, made with a dash of organic agave and real quinine from real Peruvian trees (as opposed to High Fructose Corn Syrup and synthetic quinine). As a result, Q Tonic tastes cleaner and crisper, has 60% fewer calories, and is a much better match for top shelf spirits. You can read the fun story of how Q Tonic came about under the Profile tab on this page.
Teatulia Teas – Denver, Colorado
Teatulia offers teas that come directly from their garden nestled against the Himalayas. There is no middle man, no long-term warehouse storage. The result: exquisite, organic teas, fresh, clean and smooth. I’m curious about the Neem Nectar Tea, the neem plant being a cornerstone of the Ayurvedic tradition, known as a “healer of all ailments”. Tea bags are biodegradable. Canister is compostable. How perfect.
Meyer Lemon Olive Oil by Stella Cadente – Fort Bragg, California
I have an incurable weakness for anything lemon. This Meyer lemon olive oil thus immediately caught my eye. To make this oil, Stella Cadente crushes the sweetest Meyer lemons together with late harvest olives in early February. They say the result is an amazingly fragrant lemon oil with exceptional lemon flavor. No kidding. Their olives are grown in Northern California, and their flavored oils are created by pressing the fruit or herb along with the olives at the mill. I love this quote: “Stella Cadente’s local wine-country roots are an essential part of our product’s identity. As technology continues to separate people from each other and from their culinary roots, it is important to remember where our food comes from”. Exactly.  Shop their oils HERE.
boulder-popcorn-starter-kit175 Boulder Popcorn – Louisville, Colorado
This popcorn artisan hopes to re-introduce the great tradition and great taste of popcorn the way it used to be, before mass production, GMO’s and microwaves. I love the idea of this Popcorn Starter Kit, which contains everything we would need to start popping fresh popcorn at home. This kit includes three bags of different varieties of popcorn. I didn’t even know that I’d ever had a choice!!! Great house warming or hostess gift idea too.
bonbonbar-scoth-bars-175 BonBonBar – Los Angeles, California
And, bien sur, I have to finish with chocolate. BonBonBar, founded by Nina Wanat, specializes in candy bars made with… wholesome ingredients. All BonBonBar candies are handmade in Los Angeles from fresh ingredients that are organic and local whenever possible. I looooooooove this woman. For now, I have arrested my choice on the Single Malt Scotch Bars. Nina vows that the combination of single malt scotch and dark chocolate is one of the more special sensations in the confectionery world. Read the whole sinful description HERE.

It’s the little things in our lives that make it so special. I know that any of these “little things” will pack a wonderful & succulent punch in my day. Life is good.
