OK GO’s Latest & Brilliant “This Too Shall Pass” Video
I looooooooooooove this video. If you remember (you should, it was one of last decades most viral videos), OK Go is the band that made the Treadmill video.
The “Machine” in this video was invented and created by 20 (yes 20!) engineers. The construction of the Machine – using 10,ooo sq. ft. of space over two floors – must have been a daunting though thrilling task. I don’t even want to guess how many trials they had to go through to make this work. And how many pianos, TVs, mannequins and other items had to be smashed to get to that perfect take. Imagine having to pick up all those ping pong balls between each take…
You can see the “making of” videos on YouTube as well. My favorite clip is the Making of TTSP #3. I’m super stoked that they are mentioning the awesome Trash for Teaching organization which I featured just last week for their Castaway Kits.
Gotta love these geeks. Brilliance is sexy.

Since the kids were on a 2 hour delay due to snow my daughter [a future engineer] was able to watch this with me. Thanks for sharing such wonderful videos. I always learn something fascinating or see something interesting when I read your posts.
Thanks Anne! I also watched with my son, a future engineer too. It was fun to see that engineers can let loose and build wacky stuff like this too. I loved the reference to mindshare labs. Something for our kids to investigate in a few years!
Wow! I enjoyed that, but I was more struck by how MUCH it takes to WOW me (and, I assume, many on the Interwebs). We see such amazing things, day after day, often along these same lines. It’s not especially viral or memorable, just because it doesn’t feel new. I wonder if it means we’re slowly becoming used to (or even bored by) the extraordinary. I guess it makes it all the more extraordinary when something truly strikes us as, well, extraordinary.
So Scott, what are you saying? You find this one “extraordinary” or not?
I agree with you. We are becoming more and more blasé by things that would have wow-ed us not so long ago. This video wow-ed me. All the intelligence & creativity that went into it…
Just reading the post, and thinking about the video, made me realise just what a headache this must have been. In the final video, the guys were already covered in paint before the cannons at the end.
ouch, the set must have failed at least once before, how excited did they all look when they got a wrap.
How on earth did someone sit down and design something like this?
