Sunseals: Children’s Swimwear That’s Got Flair and Sun Protection
By Audrey van Petegem, Contributing Editor
I know that I keep writing about summer. But hey, is anybody NOT thinking about summer right now? Living in a beach-side town in Southern California, it is hard not to think of water and sun. And having children, it is hard not to think about protecting them from the dangers of sunburns at the beach.
Glad I discovered this great Canadian company, SunSeals. They make swimsuits and accessories that have unique solar protection that screens out 98% of the sun’s harmful ultra-violet rays. 98 percent! They use chlorine treated nylon/lycra and polyester four way stretch fabric. These fabrics are quick drying and breathable. The swimsuits have been designed for children up to 14 years old, offering styles for both boys and girls that use the latest color trends, print and fashion styling.
The Sundress style swimsuit is a 2-piece suit designed to go from street to beach without changing. The Diver style is a one piece suit that provides complete coverage on arms and legs. The Retro swimwear style features cute short & top sets that can be worn at anytime, not just at the beach. And let’s not forget the hats to protect those adorable little faces. The multitude of styles go from cute & frilly to cool bandannas to flap hats in every color.
Shawnee Redford started the company as she was looking for swimwear to keep her own children protected from sun exposure as they spent long hours outside, busy with beach and water activities. With years of experience in the fashion industry, particularly in sportswear, it was a natural step for Shawnee to start her own children’s swimwear company. Using her own children as her target consumers, Shawnee was able to come up with these great designs, using rub-proof and sweat-proof, no fuss, no nonsense sun protection material.
All swimsuits and accessories can be ordered on line at www.sunseals.com.

How unique! Nylon/lycra and polyester! And it keeps the sun off our bodies!
Wait a minute. Every time I wear clothes in the sun it keeps me from getting tan. Even my bikini keeps me from getting a tan on the skin it covers. It must be keeping the sun off my body! I wonder what UV index regular cotton or spandex has? This marketing gimmick is like saying ‘Buy these clothes because they’ll actually keep you from being naked!’. And if you’re wearing swimwear isn’t your aim to be out in the sun? Shall we go back to the one piece, full body jump suit for swimming at the beach?

I have not been able to find a swimsuit that will completely cover my ‘tween’ daughter that she will actually wear. She loves wearing a bikini but I am worried about the sun exposure and trying to keep suntan lotion on her as she goes in and out of the water. Desiree and I looked at the website and she actually loved the styles and prints that these swimsuits come it. She loved the idea that the ‘swimdress’ would even be cool just as an everyday outfit. She said she would even wear the bandanna!! Thank you for sharing this company with us.
