Wearable Holographic Technology for Strength and Balance

By Audrey van Petegem, Senior Editor

You’ve seen people of all ages wear these “rubber” bracelets, anklets and necklaces with holograms on them, and you knew it wasn’t just another Livestrong copycat. But what are these things? Well, let me tell you…

My son has been wearing a holographic necklace for years. Designed for surfers, he swears by Power Balance to help him with his balance in such sports as surfing, skimming, skateboarding, wakeboarding and snowboarding. The website explains how it works and it’s pretty straightforward: the body’s cells naturally generates electro-magnetic energy, which is essential for the body’s performance and well-being. The holographic technology is designed to resonate with this energy, creating a body that is more in harmony. This allows the body’s muscles to relax and the blood flow to increase.

After my nephew suffered a skateboarding accident and then, later the same year, broke his arm while snowboarding, I thought that a holographic bracelet might work for him. I bought him an EFX wristband (another of the brands that make these wearable holographic pieces) for Christmas. Since he was in a cast almost all winter he never did get on his snowboard again, but he never took his holographic wristband off. This summer, he tried wakeboarding for the first time. He could not believe how confident he felt and how easy he thought it was. Easy? He likes to credit EFX.

I now also wear a holographic bracelet all the time and have noticed a difference in my ability to stay up later at night and I sleep much more soundly. I also notice more strength and balance in my yoga practice. My son gave one to his grandmother for her birthday to help her balance and she wears it faithfully. Take a look at the EFX website to learn more about the technology and take a look at the balance test. We all took it and it does work that way.

Placebo effect? Snake oil? Maybe. And, I am not a scientist but I do know that I feel better wearing one of these holographic bracelets and so do three of my family members. I never take mine off. If you wear one, I would love to hear your story.

As someone who has been involved with holography for over 30 years, I cannot think of any way that wearing an embossed hologram (essentially a plastic sticker with a thin layer of metal) on a rubber wristband can have any effect, other than to make the wearer look like a gullible idiot. No offence, but think about it…
Steve McGrew, one of the inventors of the technology, has been quoted as saying that holograms ‘cannot affect any aspect of human physiology or neurology.’

They must do something different than a standard hologram, because they sure have a ton of reputable
athletes that swear by the product. Not to mention my friend just met with the President of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Dr. Clark who wears one too and he said he uses it as a tool with all his athletes.

The comment about your buddy Steve who invented holograms is kind of silly, because unless he has tested those exact holograms he has no basis. I read on the website that they are exposed to certain frequencies that supposedly react with your body’s energy field. As crazy as that does sound. I am not one to knock it unless I tried it for myself. Which makes me want to try it. Ha.

Many people had also been quoted saying “the world was flat”, I guess they were wrong. Do your
research before you start tearing people down. Just a thought!

Actually, these have been tested and shown not to work. The balance test the manufacture promotes is a fraud, and the fact that anyone “swears by” them only serves to illustrate the power of the placebo effect.

I got mine last year at a running expo and like you said – I haven’t taken mine off!! I love it – placebo effect or not – I feel more balanced in general and during running.
