A business model perfect for our times. ShopitupChic, is a cute little online boutique that sells as well as lends out fashionable, contemporary clothing. The site was launched just a couple of months ago by Christin and Katie, formerly apparel & shoe buyers for a highly visible online retailer. These two young ladies believe that fashion should be accessible to all body types and wallet sizes. So, in their boutique, one can buy any of the (very well priced) pieces that are displayed or rent a number of them, depending on the rental membership program that is picked. For example, the top of the line program is $39.99 a month, which allows the borrowing of up to 4 pieces at a time, for up to 20 days. One can return and re-borrow as many times as desired (or as shipping time will permit) during the month. Other plans are $29.99 and $19.99 per month. No yearly commitment!

I think that this is quite a genius way to go. It’s undeniably money saving, and whether Christin and Katie knew it or not, it’s also a “green” idea. It’s perfect for the young professional who is fashion & trend savvy and who knows better than to spend her hard earned dollars on clothing that will be so passé in just a few months. This concept is also great for special events; lots of cute dresses that would fit many fancy occasions.

Every piece is dry-cleaned when it is returned (fear not for cooties) and is rented back in its nearly new condition. The resale store (which has no stock yet because everything is so new) will offer discounted pricing on gently worn or switch-of-season articles.  Watch for many new items to be added to the store.

ShopitupChic is democratizing the “borrowing” apparel or accessories, which until now was pretty much reserved to the elite designer world, with companies like BagBorroworSteal.com or WearTodayGoneTomorrow. Très cool, non?
