Yoga in the Car – Om the Road

3 February 2009 Leave a Comment

Jennifer Bloom, the creative director for Om the Go®, had been teaching yoga for about 5 years when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her yoga practice saved her life. Almost five years later, she is back to teaching, this time with a more contemplative, quiet, accessible and joyful yoga.

jen-bloom“After seven years of teaching yoga in studios and classrooms, I grew tired of preaching to the choir. I wanted to create a yoga practice that everyone could use, and find the time for… Americans are stressed and taking it out on each other. A calm, beautiful and full life is well within everybody’s reach. Everyone knows about yoga, and I want to find a way for everyone to try it. Yoga is a path towards health and healing so obvious that it’s easy to miss.”

The idea foyoga-in-the-car3r Yoga in the Car™ by came to her when she was driving, with three other friends, on her way to Washington DC to attend a peace rally. Traffic was at a standstill for hours and she was dismayed to see that all their positive and benevolent energy was vanishing before her eyes. She decided to conduct a yoga-in-the-car session to restore spirits. It worked so well, that she knew that she was on to something. So, now, with yoga in the car, instead of being frustrated and angry of being stuck in traffic, you can find an opportunity to reclaim that time to get in a better “space”.  It’s yoga that anyone can do.

About the Yoga in the Car™ CD:
Starting with an introduction to breath and the concept of “alert meditation”, this particular form of yoga uses a combination of focus and subtle movements to help you relax, release tension, and wake up potential energy. Jen will guide you through exercises designed to relax the areas that get most aggravated by sitting too long – the neck, shoulders, back, and hips. All that accumulated tension will be turned into something useful – energy. You will be more relaxed and focused and arrive wherever it is that you’re going with a heightened sense of awareness.

I used the Yoga in the Car CD on a drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and yoga-in-the-car2although the traffic conditions were not particularly stressful, the CD helped tremendously to alleviate the soreness and tiredness that comes with sitting, pedal to the metal, for four straight hours. That, and Jen’s serene, joyous and motivating voice and tone make this CD a must for anyone who drives in traffic or long distances.

Great news: Om the Go®’s Yoga in the Plane™ CD is coming out this spring. This will be followed up with a “Yoga for the Chem Chair”, something that was also directly inspired by Jen’s experience.

As Jen says this is good “car-ma”!

You can buy your Yoga in the Car CD, for $15.95, on the Om The Go site HERE.

Namasté.
